It all began three months ago, on the twentieth of September 2013, in the small town of Rosewood. It was our last week of vacation before my friends and I make it to senior year and we wanted it to be special, so we decided to go camping somewhere near town. It was nine o’clock in the morning when I first left home, and it was starting to get frosty. As I walked toward the place where we decided to meet, I noticed that the wind was blowing. This typical fall weather reminded me of the bitter thought of the summer coming to an end.


When we finally met up in the forest, we checked our bags then walked and walked for a long time. However, after a few hours, the sun hid behind grey clouds and it began raining. This sudden change of weather took us by surprise, so we ran like crazy until we’ve found a place safe enough to stay. After a while, we saw an enormous castle, which was really strange as none of us had noticed it before even if we knew the forest very well. Even though we found its presence a little weird, we entered the fortress since we had no choice despite this or staying in the rain. It was a miserable place. Light was dim and flickered from the torches bolted to the stone walls. At first sight we thought it was inhabited, but then we searched around every corner and discovered no one lived there, so we decided to stay the night. We gathered around the fireplace, began talking about the following year of high school and promised to stay in touch when we would go to college. But when we noticed that large rats were chasing each other across the floor searching for food, we got disgusted and went to bed early. There weren’t many rooms upstairs, so I shared mine with my twin sister. It was just past midnight when we were getting ready to sleep, and all was quiet except for the occasional rustle of a chain. We were wondering where was it coming from, when a single set of footsteps echoed throughout the halls, breaking the heavy silence. We figured someone might have climbed down the spiral steps into the dungeon, so we got out of bed and got ready to fight if needed. Suddenly, the room’s door opened and a strange guy emerged in front of us, dressed head-to-toe in a long black cloak. The man lowered his hood and revealed his face. He was very thin and tall, as his head nearly touched the ceiling. He had red lips and hair as dark as coal. He was weirdly smiling, revealing his white sharp teeth. He scared the hell out of me, especially when he said: “Hi there! I see we have visitors tonight. Don’t be scared, I love guests. I just have a special way to treat them”. His sights were set on my neck, which didn’t surprise me as I quickly figured out he was a vampire. While he was staring at us, I ran toward my bag and searched in my stuff. When I finally found my snack, he began sneering: “Are you looking for garlic? Don’t even bother! Everything you believe can hurt us was only made-up by humans to reassure themselves.” I looked at my twin and held her hand, kind of asking for her help. That’s when I decided to act like a grown-up and overcome my fear. I looked down at my watch and was positively surprised to see that it was already seven a.m. I took a deep breath and calmed down. I walked to the window with caution and all of sudden, I yanked open the drapes to let the light in. The creature cried of pain as the first rays of sun penetrated through the curtains. While we were watching him wither away, I shouted with pride: “Maybe I was wrong about the garlic, but the truth is vampires cannot stand sunlight”. When we were sure our enemy had passed away, we woke our friends up and left the castle. When we were home at last, we told them everything that had happened with us but none of them actually believed us.


Then all I remember is opening my eyes. I was shivering and sweating, and I barely could breath. I remember looking around me and staring at the wall. When I discovered I was in my room and understood it was just a bad nightmare, I felt like a weight just lift off of my shoulders. However, when I looked down to my agenda, I noticed we were on the 20th of September and I had to catch up with some friends of mine. I hesitated a lot about going, because even though I wanted to and I knew that vampires aren’t real, I still thought of the aftermath. Was it really worth it?
