In an attempt to get even closer to the kind of fuel that most of theworld is used to, some companies, such as OriginOil Inc. based in Los Angeles, are planning to use biological feedstocks to produce oils that can be fed into conventional refineries just like crude oil. OriginOil announced in January that it plans to co-develop an integrated systemwith the US Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for direct conversion of raw algae into a renewable crude oil, based on the company’s existing technology for harvesting, dehydrating and breaking down algae.
