The Horace C. Cabe Foundation was funded by Mr. Cabe's estate in October 1993. The Directors are elected by a Family Membership Group which meets three times each year to consider applications from social service, youth, medical, cultural, preservation, civic, religious, and educational organizations. Horace Clay Cabe was born in Queen City, Texas, and raised in Stamps, Arkansas. He served as one of the first pilots in the United States Navy during World War I. After graduation from Southern Methodist University and the Harvard School of Business, he worked briefly in New York City for the Chase National Bank before returning to southwestern Arkansas to begin his career in the lumber industry. Mr. Cabe acquired timber land and instituted active and successful programs in reforestation and other land resource management practices. His sister and brothers joined with him, and together they built the Gurdon Lumber Company into one of the largest family-owned businesses in the state.
