Abstract— Early work in sensor networks found traditionallayered communication architectures too restrictive and proposedcross-layer optimizations. Recent work in data aggregation, however, argues that the complexity of cross-layer optimizations maylead to fragile and unmanageable systems. This has inspired us tocreate Rime, a layered communication stack for sensor networks, with much tinner layers than traditional architectures. Rimeis designed to simplify the implementation of communicationprotocols. A preliminary evaluation suggests that Rime may beable to significantly reduce the implementation complexity ofsensor network protocols with only a small increase in resourcerequirements, hinting that a layered stack may be a suitablecommunication abstraction even for sensor networks.
