ArcelorMittal to start production of new high strength steels for automotive industry
World Steel News 2.9.2014
ArcelorMittal has unveiled a new range of high-strength steels for the automotive industry.
Under the ambitious investment programme in Europe and America, teams at the company's Maizieres-les-Metz (France) and East Chicago (the USA) developed the FortiformTM range of steels, which could lead to further weight savings of up to 20% in vehicle parts. This is a crucial advantage nowadays as car makers come under pressure to further lighten vehicles and thereby reduce their emissions to conform to requirements of the EU. The target is to reduce CO2 emissions to 130 g per km by 2015 and to 95 g per km by 2021. Reducing the weight of the vehicle by around 12 kg saves 1 g of CO2 per km. Because of its properties, the FortiformTM range of steels for cold stamping is able to absorb more energy in a crash. This makes it suitable for use in many structural parts of the vehicle that may be affected during a blow.
In 2013, ArcelorMittal spent $270 million on research activities, 30% in the automotive market, Metal Expert has learnt. “We work together with carmakers from the early stages of a vehicle’s life to integrate the most innovative steels in their designs. This enables them to hit targets for fuel efficiency without compromising on safety, style or affordability,” Greg Ludkovsky, the vice president of Research & Development at ArcelorMittal, comments.
New steels will be produced at two ArcelorMittal sites in Belgium: Gent and Kessales (Liege).
