Music is something we hear everyday

Music is something we hear everyday. Whether it be from our own ipods, in our cars, or background music to our lives. A song exists for almost every emotion and music can be considered a highly healing mechanism. Over the years there have been numerous types of music that all encompass different beats, sounds, and evoke different emotions. Such types of music is hip hop and rap, alternative music, and rock and roll music. Music has a long time line and every single sound and type of music is intertwined within eachother and influenced by eachother. For these reasons, music not only defines a type of sound, but also recreates lifestyles and defines entire generations. The power of music can be seen from all different types of music.
One of the more popular forms of music that has been formed much more recently is Rap/Hip Hop. There are many components of Rap. But in short it is a style of music that consists of semi-monotonic rhymes strung together over musical beats. It doesn't stop there, extra loud bass and various drum beats are commonly incorporated. In the early stages of hip hop, raps were performed by DJs. The sounds comprised from turn tables and mic checks have been incorporated into many rap songs. The majority of early raps were live, performed at parties instead of concerts which is why "Hip-hop is a form of popular music that's comprised mainly of emceeing and deejaying,"1. MCing and DJing have continued to play a large role in defining the sounds of rap. As for the lyrical portion of hip hop; songs are extremely varied in content. Although the lyrics displayed in songs have become more arrayed as rap progresses, many early artists performed songs about poverty and/or violence. Drug references have often been made, even in modern times, adding to hip hop's explicit connotation. Most lyrics reflect the humble beginnings of hip hop but as a whole, lyrics have come to encompass a wide spectrum with anything from club scenes to serious political issues. Lyrics have also played a role in defining the genres of rap which have grown with rap as it has expanded over the years.
As rap has expanded, it has been classified into sub-genres itself. Rap has grown to encompass much more than the origional simple drum beats and strung lyrics,"It has become more eclectic, borrowing from soul, jazz and live instrumentations,"2. These knew styles have lead to an expanding sub-genre category. The different beats, lyrics and geographical location of the rapper have lead to 10 sub-genres for the differents styles of rap: West Coast, East Coast, Dirty South, Gangster Rap, Pop Rap, Christian Rap, Conscious Rap and Electro Hiphop 3. While the first three categories pertain mainly to location, there are still certain sounds and subjects of lyrics that pertain to each area. Each area has different influences, for example, "Dirty South rap is known for is danceabilty and rhythmic delivery,"4. Gangster Rap is one of the early most controversial styles of hip hop. These songs usually glorify criminal life and contain explicit content. Pop Rap is a much more recent genre that has catered to listeners more than any other style. Pop doesn't contain any very specific sound; lyrics are usually watered down and less controversial than gangster rap. Chirstian Rap and Conscious Rap are both very similiar as they are generally more respectful and reflective styles. Jazz Rap and Electro Pop are the most recent forms of Rap, both incorporated aspects of jazz and electric into rap.
Hip Hop Rap has expanded beyond the boundaries of beats and rhymes,"As a whole hip hop has become just as much of a culture as a style of music,"5. Many can connect to the the lyrics in Rap which has made it that much more popular. Hip Hop consists of a very wide cultural spectrum,"the music (beats) that makes up hip-hop, comes from different nationalities and races, especially from black people,"(global). Hip Hop has grown very quickly,"Since hip-hop emerged from the South Bronx in the 1970s, it has become an international, multi-billion-dollar phenomenon,"(pbs) and it isn't done expanding. Rappers everywhere are pushing new boundaries and creating new sounds to add the the Hip Hop arsenal. "Hip-hop as a musical melting pot is still evolving,"6.
Alternative Music, originally dubbed Alternative Rock or simply Alternative, entered the limelight in the 1980’s. Known for its deliberate deviation from the norm, alternative was both different and new yet also retained undertones of the classic, oldie style. It is most commonly associated as a compilation of "...grunge, Britpop, Goth rock, and indie pop"7, yet is completely set aside as its own independent genre. Alternative swept stages across the nation and gained fame seemingly through word of mouth rather propaganda or publicity. Alternative music beckoned for power and an open ear, but simply in a way that was contrary to other genres of the time such as punk, rap, and jazz, which is how the public increasingly fell under the spell of enticement. Wandering away from mainstream culture, alternative was looked upon as unorthodox. It's rebellious hints and anti-status quo appeal kept the people's interest satisfied and craving for more, which led to the era's latest craze and one of the world's contemporary first picks in music genres. Andrew Carew, entertainment go-to-guy and writer for About.com on the subject of music news, elaborates by clarifying that "Alternative music is an umbrella term for underground music that emerged in the punk rock movement during the mid 80's"8. Due to the punk music uproar which occurred at the same time alternative entered the scene, much talked-about reactions arose and alternative took to a low-key, if you will, type of nonchalance cover that disguised itself in a manner that receded the ordinary reality into the crux of an extraordinary fantasy. Its lyrics depict a spectrum polar to "racism, sexism, classism, etc"9; they came from the heart and the roots of mankind which definitely clench a mighty hold to a more meaningful approach versus the usual, "sex-drug-violence" approach which bores, serves no purpose, and reiterates more than desirable. To state bluntly there will always be music that falls somewhere in-between, music that is somewhat like but not entirely the same as what is predominantly popular at a certain period in time"10, and this is what people have come to call Alternative.
If Alternative was not publicized, then how did people hear about it? Well, as Carew further states, "Music has always attracted the free-thinkers and the radicals, and underground music has been the place where the most radical of the radicals has been championed"11 Obviously, the territory of alternative music was therefore explored underground and amidst the hidden hot spots of the 80's. The "underground" subset regions highly noted for the success of this genre were colleges, night clubs, garage hang-outs, and after-hours bars. First and foremost, the beginning traces of alternative music were, "made in the late 60s with groups like The Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, and The Silver Apples... and continued through out the 70s with bands like David Bowie, T-Rex... and The New York Dolls" 12. This shows us that from generation to generation and decade to decade a continual pat of invention and talk, forms of low-exposure media and tune-in topics surmised the awakening of a future fever of monomania and infatuation, which reached its climax in the 1980s. So much infatuation in fact, that immense popularity seized the chords of alternative's rhythms and, "Soon major Alternative radio stations began appearing around the US. Independent or rock record labels were discovering a scene awash with untapped talent"13. Quite undoubtedly, alternative music brought change to its atmosphere and brought in major hype that riled America and escalated a creative desire for artists to seize.
After the public showed an increasing interest in the alternative category, many musicians began singing their way to spotlight. Artists and bands that synchronized their talent and reached success were, "Metallica, Gin Blossoms, Sonic Youth, Ani DiFranco, Alice in Chains, and Oasis were all now being marketed as alternative"14. These bands co-mingled with the old and the new to mix a beat that held true to the name alternative. With this constant flow from old styles like rock and roll to new styles like Rap/hip-hop, Americans gradually found that alternative was the illumination in between. Then, alternative hit gold! Nirvana came out with their first hit, Nevermind, and alternative awoke. Veritably, "In 1986 on MTV, the United States began airing a late night television program with alternative music videos called 120 minutes"15. People started seeing and listening. De facto, they liked the sound they heard! This proved that, "The explosion of alternative rock was truly aided by MTV and festivals, such as Lollapalooza"16. These slight tid-bits of broadcasts and publicity announcements procured alternative to become the strong foundation for many other musicians to come. The most popular bands that trailed after the chorus of Nirvana were some of the best and most commonly known and appreciated bands that alternative rock ever spit out, such as: " Korn, System of a Down,. Radiohead, Foo Fighters, and Lincoln Park"17 Lazarus. Alternative showed a different side to music, a unique liking that glorified the power of passion through lyrics, fame without unnecessary exposure, and truth through the voices of many, very talented musicians.
It blared out the sides of the jukeboxes, reverberating a sound that caused the individual to shake their hips as Joan Jetts voice harshly, but sweetly spoke the words "I love rock and roll." Rock and roll, much like other types of music, evokes certain emotions which cause a shifting in moods from individual
