McKinsey’s international expansion began in London, in 1959; by 1971 there were 17 offices on four continents (see Exhibit 4). “The firm,” argued Ronald Daniels, former managing director of McKinsey & Company, “is the most international corporation currently operating in the world.”2 To
maintain a culture of “one firm,” McKinsey had developed a variety of systems: exchanging professionals between offices, worldwide training programs, multioffice professional development seminars, and interoffice personnel evaluations. The integration had not come cheap; Daniels noted in the 1987 Forbes article, “We are the high-cost producer.”
