Speaker’s NotesThis first scene allowed us to discuss some important points regarding machine hazards, bypassing safety devices, and inspecting the machine before using it.Keep your hands away from a machine’s point of operation. Whether cutting, drilling, shaping, punching, shearing, or bending, the point of operation is where the action is. The operator’s hands should never be in the point of operation.Machine guards and safety devices are designed to protect the operator from injury. Never bypass a machine safe guard.Make sure all power-transmitting units are adequately guarded so that the operator or any other worker cannot get his or her hand caught in a chain/sprocket or belt/pulley.Do not operate a machine if any guards are missing. Report the missing guard to a supervisor or maintenance person immediately.Do a pre-operation inspection of your machine. Make sure all guards are in place.
