from another. Significantly, place names have meanings, origins
and types, and in the case of human settlements, are mainly
descriptive and sometimes historical. As a type of human
settlement, a country is also believed to have a meaning. It is
thought to usually derive its name from (or is named after) a
famous individual, particular ethnic group, a geographical location

and Zimbabwe, after Stone Houses. Ghana could also be added to
this list, specifically, both its current name, meaning ‘‘Warrior
King’’ (see Owusu-Gyamfi, 2012), and its colonial name, the Gold
Coast, ‘‘so called by Europeans on account of its abundant and
copious yield of gold’’ (Buah, 1998, p. 6)
