In a typical procedure for the determination of about
0.05 to 0.5 mg. of a monocarbonyl, the sample contain-ing the monocarbonyl was combined with 20 ml. tertiary
butyl alcohol containing 0.5-1.0 g. of Girard T reagent,
and the mixture shaken three hours at room temperature.
The reaction mixture was poured into 200 ml. of ice
water and extracted with petroleum ether to remove all
fat-soluble material. The Girard T hydrazones remain
in the aqueous phase.
