Good girls go to heaven but CL goes anywhere she wants.

Today’s W Korea photoshoot was specially with your younger sister.
CL I really wanted to do it because I thought it would be a good memory with my younger sister. Also, the concept was new for me.

How would you introduce your sister Harin?
She’s a Hong Kong University student. She’s just a normal student who has no interest in the entertainment industry, but since we take a lot of pictures together, she’s used to taking pictures. I worried a lot because this photoshoot environment was new for her, but I think she had fun, and I’m glad she came out very pretty.

How is you two’s relationship in real life?
Since I started working early and my sister was studying abroad, we lived apart for 10 years since middle school. If we lived with each other everyday, we might have fought, and we’re 4 years apart, too, but I think we became a lot closer because we didn’t see each other often. Nowadays, my sister is on vacation and I’m preparing for my American debut, so we are traveling together and making good memories.

Since clothes and make-up were mentioned, you have been determinedly searching for a style that suits you for the past few years.
I think I’ve matured in front of the camera. Some people are ready from the beginning, but because I started when I was 17, I grew and showed various sides of me on camera. It is embarrassing when I see my old self now but I always enjoy learning more about and finding myself.

An overseas blog described your style as ‘bold and colorful and isn’t afraid to experiment’. How would you describe your own fashion?
I like a defined style with a definite line. I wore lace today but even in a witches concept, I want my color to shine through, and basically like spectacular things.

You described wearing the seemingly conservative Valentino lace dress as ‘a big adventure’. Your idea of adventure is different from others’.
Even if I wore lace, I was used to wearing stage outfits with a lingerie look, rather than covering my body, but in today’s shoot there were a lot of dainty, conservative dresses. I liked the Valentino dress the most out of all the outfits, and it’s a style my mom would like. It’s kind of like the style that my mom used to dress me in when I was little (laughter). As I grew up I moved away from this type of style, but today I came back to it.

Of course, your preference would be to try new styles that you haven’t worn before, like today.
A lot of times, I wore swimsuits and high heels during photoshoots. From that perspective, today was new for me. Long dresses and lace dresses are an adventure and a new experiment for me.

Like your younger outfits that your mom gave you and your stage outfits are different, if there a difference between the CL you show on stage and the person named Lee Chaelin?
First of all, Chaelin doesn’t go out of her house so she’s always wearing her pajamas. She’s really a house-lover that only family can see (laughter).

Your performance at MAMA in Hong Kong established CL’s position between other artists, especially various female artists. And you really pushed against the grain as a national female artist with ‘HELLO BITCHES’. How do you plan and regulate your level of power and strength?
Honestly, I don’t really think about it much. As it is a broadcast, curse words are obviously controlled and censored, but if I think and calculate how strong I should be on stage, I can’t do anything, and I get no inspiration. If I think that I have to figure it out, I feel like my mind and thoughts are restricted inside a mold. It’s rather easier just to go as far as you can and then take some out. That’s the way I do things, and I advise people around me to do the same.

style_56723c8bea13b-1200x776
I’m curious in what context you used the word ‘Bitch’.
It’s in a humorous context, like how Westerners say ‘what’s up bitch’ as a joke among friends. The song and the video is a gift to fans in Korea and Asia who have waited for a long time, and also an intro for those who don’t know me yet, like in America. I did it like this, because I felt that it was most like me.

When I see your character in ‘THE BADDEST FEMALE’ and ‘HELLO BITCHES’, the saying, ‘Good girls go to heaven, but bad girls go anywhere’, pops in my head. There is a freedom from breaking free.
I want to always be a bad girl (an ‘akdong’ means almost like brat, but more lighthearted). Although I’m more conservative than people think and I have rather strict rules for myself, I don’t want there to be restrictions and limitations for me, and always want to keep a young mind. When my album comes out, you will be able to hear different genres with different stories, but my first solo track ‘THE BADDEST FEMALE’ and my new one ‘HELLO BITCHES’ both focuses on telling my identity.

There’s probably pros and cons to first being active as a group then alone.
It’s loud and fun during standby time when I’m with my members. I really feel this emptiness when I travel, participate in photoshoots, and interview alone. Even though I usually talked the most during group interviews, the feeling of being next to my members is different. The year of solo activities was a challenged that pushed me out of my familiar comfort zone.

How would you define happiness?
For me, happiness and stability are not the same. Since I’m still young, I think I am more happy when I’m anxious, but working hard towards a goal than achieving money and fame. And maturing with a friend that I can relate with is also happiness.

It seems like a 25-year-old definition of happiness.
But as I work with people my age, there are some that say unstable situations are bad. Obviously, you cannot figure everything out or have everything at age 25. It’s fun to encourage yourself in working hard, and clear one level after another, like a game. You learn and experience.

style_56723c81cb2b8-1200x776

You used ‘fun’ a lot in this interview.
It’s a habit (laughter). I also hear that I use ‘fun’ a lot in interviews in English, too. I think this is very important to me. It can be a man, it can be work, or a diet; if I don’t have anything interesting, I feel empty and miserable. Something to enjoy and make your heart flutter, I feel like I have purpose to live if I have something like this.

2016 will be a big and important year for you. What hopes and expectations do you have?
Shakespeare said that you can live happy everyday if you don’t expect anything(laughter). I don’t have any expectations, I have something I’m preparing, so I want to show everyone as soon as possible, but there is a time for it. I hope it will be a fun year.
