hinese HuTong (Alley or Lane) CultureHuTong, an old alley or lane belongs only to China.Thousands of HuTongs can be seen in China surrounding the Forbidden City, most of which were built in ancient times, specifically, during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty and have undergone hundreds of years of growth and development. Most of the Chinese HuTongs run due east-west with their widths being no more than 9 meters. Nearly all of the buildings in HuTongs are Siheyuans (Courtyard Houses). One Siheyuan is formed by four houses standing in the east, west, south and north respectively and symmetrically to keep the courtyard squarely enclosed. Standing closely to each other, the Siheyuans are arranged in rows with paths separate between the adjacent rows called as HuTongs. The intertwining large and small HuTongs have been woven into the splendid cloth of China by the hardworking Chinese. Inside of the long and winding HuTongs lie numerous warm homes carrying the affection of Chinese toward their HuTongs. What impress people most in the modernized Chinese city are those winding and long small HuTongs and warm and beautiful Siheyuans, instead of the rows upon rows of high buildings and the broad highways leading to all directions. Because of this, the culture of China deserves the title of “ HuTong Culture” and “Siheyuan Culture”. As a carrier of Chinese ancient culture, the HuTongs will be charming always.
