This subfamily includes four small crenera of little snakes: Xenodermus and Stoliczkia of southeastern Asia and the East Indies. Cercaspis of CeyIon, and Xenopholis of central South America. Each contains only one species except Stoliczkia, which has two. They are classified toaether because of the peculiar structure of their vertebrae. The neural spine is elongated and may be folded over dorsally to form a flat surface. The prezygapophyses are much expanded in the Asiatic forms: the postzygapophvses in the South American genus. The occipital condyles are very small. The small scales of Xenodermus and Stoliczkia are completely or almost completely attached to the dermis and are more or less separated from one another bare skin.Habits of these snakes are little known, but at least one of them, Xeno(lerrnus iacanicus, is nocturnal and lives in loose wet earth. It is frequently found in cultivated fields, and feeds on frogs. Two to four eggs are laid at a time.
