Information is important in every individual and business because it forms the basis for making informed decisions (Blundel, 1998). Information need to be directed and controlled in a manner that facilitates utmost value. Communication refers to the act of conveying information from one user to another or one point to another through various modes such as verbal, written, visualizations (graphs, logos, charts, and maps) and non-verbal signals (Mutch, 2008). Channels of communication include face-to-face, email, TV, telephone calls, written letters, Internet, text messages, brochures, and radio. Communication is an important process for any orgnisation because it can influence make or break of a business. Effects of poor communication may include: lower efficiency, subdued employee morale, and decreased Innovation (Mutch, 2008). Nothing embodies significance of effective communication as the airplane which we have seen a number of catastrophes because of poor communication (Lehman & Dufrene, 2007). Studies show that people devote about 70 percent of their time performing some act of communication hence it is sensible to propose that communication can have significant influence on an organisation’s performance (Brown et al, 2003). A report by the US Joint Commission for Hospital Accreditation indicated that the prime cause of unintended patient injury was due to communication failure in about 70 percent of the cases (Leonard & Bonacum, 2004).
