Suspensions are prepared by insoluble solids in dispersion medium, mostly water.
Some insoluble solids may easily be wet by water and disperse readily throughout
the aqueous phase with minimal agitation. Many solid materials, however, are too
hydrophobic to be wet and thus, either form large porous clumps within the liquid
or remain floated on the surface despite their high density. The low adhesion may
also result from a layer of air or greasy materials or other impurities covering
the surface of the particles. Fine powders are more susceptible to this problem
because of the larger surface area. These particles can only be wet after displacing
these adsorbed materials.
