Suspensions are prepared by insoluble solids in dispersion medium, mostly water. Some insoluble solids may easily be wet by water and disperse readily throughoutthe aqueous phase with minimal agitation. Many solid materials, however, are toohydrophobic to be wet and thus, either form large porous clumps within the liquidor remain floated on the surface despite their high density. The low adhesion mayalso result from a layer of air or greasy materials or other impurities coveringthe surface of the particles. Fine powders are more susceptible to this problembecause of the larger surface area. These particles can only be wet after displacingthese adsorbed materials.
