LEARNING OUTCOMES
The primary objective of this chapter is to demonstrate the importance of transportation to the overall tourism product and to illustrate their interdependence. Transport is responsible not only for physically moving tourists from the main originating areas to the destination, but also for their mobility once they arrive at the destination. Different modes of transport impose different environmental costs on society, while transport will become an increasingly significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. On completion of this chapter you will have:
• An understanding of the major modes of transportation for tourism, their relative importance and the competitive advantages and disadvantages of each
• An appreciation of the influence of political developments on transportation for tourism
• A knowledge of the purpose and impact of regulation in transportation
• An awareness of the externalities imposed by transport and their impacts on tourism
• An appreciation of transport’s contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) and emissions
• An understanding of transport as a tourist attract
