Six major factors determine the need toapply water in quantities greater thanannual precipitation . These are : (1) thelength of the growing season, (2) the rainfallor precipitation rate (during the growingseason), (3) the evaporation rate, (4)the type of soil present, (5) the transpirationrate of the plants to be irrigated, and(6) the water requirements of the plantmaterials .
