Invitation to provide input on the draft fishery assessment criteria and process for version 2.0 of IFFO RS Responsible Supply Standard (1st August, 2016) In order to maintain the credibility and relevancy of its leading standard, the IFFO RS Governance Board has ratified a proposal for ‘Version 2.0’ of the IFFO RS Responsible Supply Standard. The IFFO RS certification process includes two key components: the fishery assessment and the factory assessment. The development of Version 2.0 includes a thorough review of both and to start this key next step, IFFO RS Ltd. has produced a draft of the revised fishery assessment criteria and process together with a proposal for new fishery clauses. This document will be open for Public Consultation via our website for a period of 30 days beginning from 8th August 2016. A public consultation template for the fishery components is available for stakeholders and other interested parties to provide feedback. Many of the proposed changes for Version 2.0 of the fishery assessment process aim to improve the Standard’s ability to tackle fisheries of multiple species and fisheries where less information is available. It is hoped that Version 2.0 will promote more responsible management in such fisheries and ultimately further reduce the environmental impact of the fishmeal and fish oil manufacturing process. “Stakeholder involvement is very important for the development and credibility of the IFFO RS Certification Programme. We therefore welcome and encourage any comments or feedback regarding the revised fishery assessment criteria and process together with a proposal for new fishery clauses. We look forward to launching IFFO RS V2 and continuing to promote more responsible fisheries management and marine ingredient production practices.” Francisco Aldon, Head of OperationsNotes for Editors1. The Global Standard for Responsible Supply (IFFO RS) is a business-to-business certification programme thatenables a compliant factory to demonstrate that it responsibly sources its raw material from well-managedfisheries and responsibly converts that into pure and safe products. To be certified fishmeal and fish oil factories must demonstrate sourcing from well managed fisheries and safeand traceable production. Assessments are conducted by an independent certification body and in just over twoyears, IFFO RS has successfully attracted over 112 certified factories, spread across nine countries. Most of thelargest fisheries such as Peruvian anchovy, Alaskan Pollock, Sprat in Denmark and Norway, Boarfish in the UKand Faroe Island, Gulf menhaden in USA and many more have been approved for supply into the manufacturingfood chain including whole fish and by- product raw material to produce compliant marine ingredients. Fishmeal is a natural, balanced, highly nutritious feed ingredient used in diets for farmed fish and crustaceansand as a high protein supplement in nutritionally demanding periods in the life cycle of pigs and poultry, as wellas in pet food.3. Fish oil is the major natural source (97%) of the healthy long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, EPA andDHA. Most fish oil is used in feeds for farmed fish and there is an expanding market for fish oil for humannutritional supplements and functional foods.
