Economic gains fromtrading strategies. In this table, we report the annualised percentage gains in returns that investors canmake fromusing the oil price to forecast firm return variance
compared to using the historical average.We consider two trading rules. We assume that investors who use oil price to forecast return variance are risk averse. Based on this, our first
trading rule is that every time the forecasts of return variance are greater than the average of the actual return variance, investors invest 100% in the risk-free US three-month Treasury
bill rate; otherwise, they invest in the sector. Our second trading rule is that if forecasted variance is one standard deviation off the actual variance, investorswill invest 100% in the risk-free
US three-month Treasury bill rate; otherwise, they invest in the sector. The results are based on a transaction cost of 0.1%.
