Starting Adenium Seeds

The best way to start growing adenium seeds is in a plastic growing tray. This allows the gardener to control the environment and get the seeds going before exposing them to the outdoors. Consumers can buy seeds or cultivate seeds from an adult adenium plant. To do that, wrap the seed pods with twine as soon as they appear on the plant to prevent them from opening and dispersing the seed. Then, once the pods mature, use a sharp knife to trim them from the plant, and let them dry out before removing the seeds.

Prepare the Growing Tray

To prepare the soil mixture, fill a 5-gallon bucket with one part potting soil, one part perlite, and one part sand. Slowly trickle water into the bucket until the mixture is moist but not soggy. Scoop the soil into a plastic seedling tray, filling each section to about 1 inch below the top. Place a few seeds about 2 inches apart in each section of the tray, and press them down into the soil. Wearing a pair of protective gloves, carefully dust the surfaces of the seeds with a seedling fungicide, and then cover them with another half-inch of soil. Mist the surface of the soil with a water spray bottle, and top with a plastic cover.

Nurture the Seeds

Place the full tray of seeds on top of a heat mat in an area with bright, indirect sunlight. Keep the temperature of the heat mat at 85 degrees Fahrenheit and the room temperature between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Once a day, remove the cover from the tray, and wipe it with a cloth to remove any condensation. Mist the tray only when the soil begins to dry out. When sprouts start to form, remove the tray from the heating mat, and take off the plastic cover. Water the seedlings whenever the top inch of soil is dry, and fertilize weekly with a water-soluble fertilizer.



Transplanting Adenium Seedlings to Larger Pots

About four weeks after they sprout, it is time to transplant the adenium seedlings to individual 6-inch pots. Fill a pot about three-quarters of the way with soil, and use a trowel to carefully dig around the roots of the seedling in the tray. After loosening the roots, gently lift the plant out of the tray and place it in the middle of the pot with the root ball buried about 2 inches deep. Add enough soil to reach the top of the root ball, and then water it. Place the potted adenium seedling in a warm room with bright, indirect sunlight, and keep the soil moist.



Moving Adenium Plants Outdoors

After adenium plants grow larger, it is a good idea to move them outdoors, either re-potting them in larger containers or planting them in the ground. Adenium need warm, humid conditions to grow, so plant them in a space that gets plenty of water and sunlight. The plants generally thrive from April to October in the Southwest. Although adenium are heat-tolerant plants, they do need more regular watering in extremely hot climates, so keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. In the winter, move the plants indoors, or cover them to protect them from frost. During the winter season, the plants go dormant but return to growing when temperatures warm up.
