I am from Vietnam, and in Vietnam all students that got to Primary and Secondary Schools have to wear a uniform. The most common type of uniform consists of a white shirt with school logo on left sleeve and navy/black trousers, with a red scarf for students from grade 3 to grade 9, and there is no differences between boy and girl's uniforms. However, many schools (private or famous public schools) have their own designed uniforms. The white áo dài is also a tradition uniform for high school girls in Vietnam. It makes us feel part of the school community, and whilst the lack of choice is usually something which is brought up as an argument against it, you are only wearing it for school hours every day, and it wouldn't be as if you were the only one wearing it; everyone would be. Anyway, they look a lot more smart than casual clothes, and some people even suggest that looking smarter helps induce a better learning environment. They should be Schools uniforms help unite the students by giving them an identity. It also allows for discipline. It is exactly like in the army. Also, uniforms make students equal. There is no jealousy or envy related to clothing. It has been found that wearing uniforms decrease violence and allows students be ready more quickly in the morning.Simple and Eliminates a large part of Bullying Uniforms do exactly what the name implies. They eliminate some unnecessary disparity between students by taking away a difference in dress, which often defines where a student stands on the social ladder. You are in school to learn, not to be judged based on your clothing choices and by taking away this difference many issues of violating dress codes can be clarified and simplified and students who's families cannot afford as nice of clothing do not have to feel financially inferior in such a public way. Students come to school to forge their own futures and destiny's, and it is the beginning of their independence from their families. Taking away this connection with the financial standing that their family's have is one less thing to worry about and one more way a student can feel independent of their family when at school. Additionally, uniforms offer convenience. There is little choice that must be made about what is within the range of the dress code and it helps students to understand how one should dress in a professional way. Most work environments have a very limited dress code depending on a person's job description and that is essentially what a uniform is. It teaches students that self expression is often required to be made in ways that express who we truly are, not how much money we have or what the current fashion trend is. Who doesn't want to fit-in when they are in high school? The requirement of uniforms in public school is a controversial subject here in the United States, but many argue that they are better in many ways. The is no doubt that in these trying economic times that uniforms would alleviate a financial burden on both the part of students' parents and Garden Grove Unified School District. For example, the yearly cost of uniforms in Long Beach is seventy to ninety dollars. Compare that to a trip to the mall. Girls can often times spend seventy dollars in one trip to the mall, many times for just one outfit. Think what the parents and students could do with all that money wasted on dressing cool for school. Likewise, each of our three Assistant Principals here at Bolsa spend approximately two and a half hours a week dealing with dress code violations, that's thirty hours a moth, and about two hundreds and seventy hours per school year. Financially that hits the district for about $15,000 a year. Not only is this money wasted, but it is time that could be better spent on the education of the students here at Bolsa. Assistant Principals could spend that time supporting new teachers, or helping students with other issue that are effecting their schoolwork. Mandating school uniforms would help both parents and the school district financially.More important than economics is the safety of our students here at Bolsa. Since Long Beach Unified adopted a uniform requirement for its 83,000 students, there have been a third fewer assault and battery cases. This statistic causes one to wonder how many students are afraid to come to school. High school students have enough pressures and reasons to not focus on school, let alone a fear of assault or battery. Uniforms would minimize these occurrences and allow students to focus on their academics in safety and less fear. Moreover, in Long Beach, student fights were cut in half, and student suspensions are down by 32 percent. These numbers prove that once again, our school is spending too much time dealing with problems such as these, rather than focusing on what goes on inside the classroom. Uniforms would allow our administration and faculty to spend more time concentrating on what is important, learning. Uniforms would decrease the number of fights and assaults on campus causing a safer learning environment for all.
