Effect on Rumen Fungi: A potentially very important
observation is that the anaerobic rumen fungi,
Neocallimastix frontalis and Piromyces rhizinflata, are
highly sensitive to Y. schidigera saponins (Wang et al.,
2000). Rumen fungi appear to fill an important niche
in the digestion of recalcitrant plant fibres, because
they cause physical as well as enzymic disruption of
plant cell walls (Orpin and Joblin, 1997). Thus, it may
well be advantageous to promote the bacterial
detoxification of the saponins in animals receiving
poor-quality forages or crop by-products.
