What do a giant, a lighthouse, and a pyramid all have in common? They are all the list of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. This list includes structures built more than 2000 years ago that were popular places with ancient Greek touristsThe most well-known wonder is the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The Pyramid was built between 2584 and 2561 BBC as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu . It is the only wonder that is still standing todayEgypt was also the location of another wonder on the list : The lighthouse of Alexandria. This lighthouse was constructed around 280 BCE and stood over 400 feel tall in Alexandria's harbor. An earthquake destroyed the lighthouse over 500 years ago . Built at approximately the same time as the lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes ( the ”giant” referred to above ) was located in Greece. It was in honor of Helios, the Greek god of the sun . It stood 120 feet tall, about as big as the Statue of Liberty. About 200 years older than the Colossus of Rhodes was the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. It was located in Greece, too. Two more wonders had difficult end . The Temple of Artemis of Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus were built in Turkey between 550 and 350 BCE. Fire and angry mobs ruined the Temple three times . In a similar way, flood, earthquake and finally invaders destroyed the Mausoleum.The seventh wonder of the ancient world is The hanging Gardens of Babylon . The hanging gardens, 75 feet above the ground , were built by King in 600 BCE to honor one of his many wives . The were located in present-day Iraq .For the Ancient Greeks , the number seven was a symbol for perfection and plenty . The believed that no more Wonders were necessary
