1. the immediate and weightiest implication of Zambia’s demographic situations is that the structure and rate of growth of its population have been obstacles to achieving most of its developmental targets2. although some impressive successes could have been achieved in areas such as health and education, greater successes could have scored had the country’s population been growing at a slower rate and had it been less youthful3. the youthfulness of population means that the momentum for future growth is high even if fertility levels decline in the immediate future4. this is because half of the population is under fifteen years of age and females entering their reproductive ages are far in excess compared with those who are moving out of those ages5. consequently, the population is bound to be much larger in the future than it is today despite any measures being taken to contain it
