Major U.S. Automaker to Relocate Treble Motors Inc. said yesterday that it plans to relocate its corporate headquarters from Houston, Texas, to Charleston, South Carolina, a picturesque little town southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina. “We're headed to the East Coast,” Beatrice Swader, president of Treble, announced to a meeting of local officials and business leaders in Charleston. A company representative said later that Treble would start moving employees at the end of this year, and hopes to have construction of the new headquarters and a nearby plant completed by the summer of 2007. After that, the Houston offices will be closed down and all remaining employees will be transferred to Charleston. Treble Motors decided on Charleston after being offered a very attractive package of tax breaks and other incentives by local officials. Residents of Charleston are hoping that securing such a large investment by a big-name corporation will spur the growth of their economy. Once all the facilities are completed, Treble estimates it will need to fill anywhere from 50 to 400 positions, mostly to replace current workers who decide not to make the move from the major metropolitan center of Houston to small-town Charleston.
