Emerson Electric Co. plans to carve off its network-power business and about $5 billion in annual sales, in a move that reflects increasing challenges for suppliers of equipment and services to the computer-server centers powering the Internet.

The spinoff decision represents a major strategic retreat for Emerson Chief Executive David Farr, who built the power business through acquisitions over the past decade on the assumption that the world’s ever-expanding dependence on computer networks would generate reliable sales growth for equipment and components.

“I wouldn’t say I would put that on my tombstone,” Mr. Farr quipped about his network-power strategy on a conference call Tuesday.

The move also reflects pressure on big industrial companies to shed underperforming divisions to improve shareholder value.

In addition to the spinoff, Emerson said Tuesday it would consider selling a large portion of its industrial-automation group, which includes drives, motors and power-generation lines. Combined, the moves would shrink by more than a third the St. Louis-based conglomerate’s annual sales, which totaled $24.5 billion in fiscal 2014.

Emerson would be left with businesses mostly focused on equipment for controlling industrial processes and components for heating and air-conditioning systems.

Data centers keep companies’ computers connected to each other, enabling them to maintain electronic records and give customers access to online services from paying bills to ordering shoes or watching movies. For years, hardware manufacturers like Emerson, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Schneider Electric SE feasted off seemingly insatiable demand for servers and related equipment that was often sold piece-by-piece.

Between 2000 and 2005, the installed base of computer servers doubled. But the growth went flat during the 2008 recession and stayed weak in the aftermath as information-technology budgets were slashed and companies began re-evaluating their computing needs.

Instead of adding more servers and software for every new computer application, companies found they could consolidate underused servers. They also turned to outside data-center hosts to provide the computing muscle to accommodate the proliferation of applications for smartphones and online streaming services.
