It has been suggested that wetland plants are merely thesubstrate for microbes, which function as they would in atrickling filter. Indeed, some have suggested that the plantscan be replaced by wooden or plastic dowels at the same stemdensity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Wetlandplants are actively passing gases, both into and out of thewetland substrate. The more correct image is of a forest ofchimneys, sending plumes of various gases into the atmosphere, interspersed with other plants acting as air intakes. On the diurnal cycle, the entire wetland “breathes” in andout, bringing in oxygen and discharging carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases.
