Lord Ganesha represents the Atman, pure consciousness, allowing the existence of the subtle body and its attributes to support life in the material plane. He represents the logical solutions for all the problems of material life, the perfect balance between strength and wisdom, power and beauty. He is the Intellect, providing us the ability to discern reality from ilusion.
Arms: Ganesha has four arms, representing the attributes of consciousness in the material plan: Buddhi (Intellect), Manas (Mind), Ahamkara (Ego) and Chitta (Conditioned Conscience).
Hands: The hands on each arm have their respective meanings as well:
• 1st hand (hand with an ax): it represents the retrenchment of all desires, bearers of pain and suffering. With this ax Ganesha can both strike and repel obstacles. The ax is also to prod man to the path of truth and righteousness;
• 2nd hand (hand with the whip): means that all worldly attachments and desires should be rid of;
• 3rd hand (blessing hand): it is turned towards the devotee, in a pose of blessing meaning also refuge and protection (Abhaya);
• 4th hand (hand with a lotus flower): the hand with the lotus flower (padma), symbolizes the highest goal of human evolution, the realization of your true self;
Head: the elephant head, actually is not a random finding, as it indicates the ultimate fidelity, intellect and discernment;
Tusks: he has two tusks: one whole and the other being broken off (or cut, in some interpretations). It means the ability to overcome all forms of dualism; also, as a Lord, from his cut tusk he allows his sincere apprentices to approach and learn from him the joy of wisdom; with the other tusk, whole and sharp, he repels the enemies of truth, those who are not ready to receive it.
Ears: ears are used to gain knowledge, they symbolize the importance of listening in order to assimilate ideas and to listen to people seeking help. Also they mean reflection upon spiritual truths. Being large they indicate that, once God is known, all knowledge is instantly known;
Omkara: it is not a freaking movie with Kareena Kapoor!! Just kidding! Omkara is one of the names of Lord Ganesha. It means "having the form of Om". You can clearly see it in the shape of his head, ears and trunk outlining the most famous Devanagari letter that represents the respective celebrated Bija Mantra: ॐ
It also means that Ganesha, as the basis of the phenomenic world, is considered the bodily incarnation of the entire Cosmos. And the curved trunk indicates the intellectual potentialities manifesting through the faculty of discrimination between the real and the unreal.
