1.2 Thesis Aim and ObjectivesThe overall aim of this study is to perform a critical analysis of the proposed ‘IllegallyLogged Timber (Prohibition of Sale and Distribution)’ Bill in order to answer the followingresearch question:Does the proposed Bill have the potential to reduce the amount of illegal timber tradedin the United Kingdom?In order to address the research question above, the study has the following objectives:i) To gauge the level of awareness of the proposed Bill amongst stakeholders in theissue of illegal logging and the trade in timber.ii) To ascertain the level of support the Bill has from stakeholders in the issue of illegallogging and the trade in timber.iii) To assess the effectiveness and implementation of similar legislation elsewhere, bothin Europe and worldwide.The research is aimed primarily at decision makers in the UK government to provideimplications to them and other interested parties (such as NGOs) about the likely success ofthe Bill should it be implemented. It will also serve to highlight any issues that arise throughthe research which may be a barrier to the Bill’s aim of reducing the amount of illegal timbersold and distributed in the UK.
