types of medication (the act system)the purpose of the act system is to serve as a tool for drug research in order to improve quality of drug use. medication can be usually classified in various ways,for example, by its chemical properties, by the mode of administration, or by the biological system affected. An elaborate and widely used classification system is the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC system), controlled by the WHO and first published in 1976. The system divides drugs, according to the organ or system on which they act and to their therapeutic and chemical characteristics. In this system, drugs are classified into group at five different levels. The first level of the code indicates the anatomical main group, and consists of a letter from the alphabet. there are 14 main groups.
