Configuration requirements for NAt64/DNS64
Before describing the details of the name resolution and connection process, it is important to understand the configuration requirements to ensure that NAT64/DNS64 can perform the DNS name resolution and traffic translation. Figure 16-1 shows the basic placement of an IPv6-only node, NAT64/
DNS64, and an IPv4-only node.

For NAT64/DNS64 name resolution and traffic translation, the following must be configured:
■ ■ For NAT64/DNS64 to receive the DNS name queries, the IPv6-only node must be configured
to use the IPv6 address of NAT64/DNS64 as its DNS server. Therefore, the IPv6-only node
must support DNS traffic over IPv6 and the configuration of IPv6-based DNS servers. For
DirectAccess, this configuration is done through entries in the Name Resolution Policy Table
(NRPT). If a name matches a configured name suffix in the NRPT (such as the intranet suffix),
those name queries are sent to the IPv6 address of a DNS server, which is the DirectAccess
server.
