There are 5 forces which shaped American culture. American culture in its early history was perceived to be provincial and second-rate by European artists. Therefore, American artists learnt from European arts while wealthy Americans collected artworks by European masters. In literature, Americans read and imitated British poetry and novels. This forms the first force of American culture which is “imported traditions”. The second force is the“American voice” first developed during the 19th century and included a cultural identity strongly connected to nature. The new American voice had liberating effects on how the culture was perceived, by Americans and by others. The third force is “immigration and diversity”, which occurred in the early 20th century as the United States became an international power, makes American culturebecame much more complex. The United States was becoming more diverse as immigrants streamed into the country. The fourth force is “Mass media” homogenizing different points of view among different groups in the United States. Class and ethnic distinctions in American culture began to fade as mass media transmitted movies and music to people throughout the United States. The fifth force is the growth of consumerism and it greatly affected the American lifestyle as they often associate products with the standard of the success. Indeed, Americans often seek self-fulfillment and status through gaining material items.
