I ‘ve never really put together the

I ‘ve never really put together the video is quite like this but basically
what you ‘re watching right now it ‘s my six part series which is intended to
take someone with little practical stick welding experience not really being
familiar that he be quickly to the process through some basic practice
drills let ‘s say this is going to be something that is going to require a lot
of practice on your part but i ‘m going to hopefully give you all the
information and the background you need to get going
and here in part what we ‘re going to do is we ‘re going to have a look at the
welder we ‘re going to be using for you to be talking a little bit about
settings
some of the hand tools and other things will be using and then we ‘re going to
work on how to strike an arc
I maintain your heart keep it from going out and even run a few beads
so if you want to hang around for that I have the courage it otherwise if you ‘ve
already if you already know this stuff feel free to skip ahead to the part 2
which is going to be flat and horizontal position
laughing LOL alright so for this is the only under stay behind with me
let ‘s have a look at what exactly we are going to be working we ‘ve got some scrap
metal which will be using to run what ‘s referred to as a pad of beads
we ‘ve got more scrap metal that will be using for arc starting practice and it ‘s
not we ‘re going to be welding with some faith in hobart 6013 these electrodes
while they might not have the highest strength of the best mechanical
properties of the common stick electrodes
they ‘re excellent on thin material and the reason we ‘re using them tonight
they ‘re they ‘re very easy to get not going with and
establish the art so we got that and then we ‘ve got our stick electrode
holder got a ground clamp clamp to our table and some basic hand tools you ‘re
going to need a flagship and hammer of course it looks kinda like this
this is a nest wing brand hammer that I ‘ve been very pleased with your gonna
need a wire brush we got one of those and some basic safety equipment we ‘ve
got her clear Jackson nemesis safety glasses as well as this kimberly-clark
professional Jackson safety brand
Balder bh3 and the primary thing you need for stick welding a stick welder
actually this is a TIG welder as you can see but it also stick weld and that ‘s
what we ‘re going to be using for tonight
so let ‘s go ahead and get this set up now the first thing you ‘re going to want
to do if you just bought a welder off the craigs list or whatever you ‘re going
to want to check the leads and I make sure they ‘re not correct there ‘s no
exposed copper sticking through nothing like that and I make sure you got a good
tight connection and then go ahead and fire up the welder
if you ‘re using a multi-process machine you want to make sure it ‘s set to stick
mode which ours is of course and for the eighth inch 6013 electrodes i ‘m going to
set this thing to about somewhere between a hundred and ten a hundred
twenty amp so i ‘ll just stick it right there in the middle and we will put it
on DC electrode negative since this is an AC DC machine if you only have an AC
welder
well that ‘s another good thing about 16 13 it ‘s AC friendly
so what I both will be using DC all right keep moving I ‘ll just put my gear
on here and the very first thing we ‘re going to be doing tonight is working on
striking an art and maintaining here and keep us going out and basically the way
we ‘re going to do this is actually going to go to turn off as well worth it if
you just watch me turn on this
I don ‘t like myself all right pretty much the way you started heart is take
your full stick electrode here
you of course inserted your electric longer and then what you do is you get
your scrap metal ready now this as you can see is what looks to be a quarter of
an inch thick and by looking at this side looks kinda dull and gray
this is called mill scale this right then grinded on here that ‘s just that ‘s
perfectly clean steel
this is called mill scale that ‘s that ‘s a little bit of really basic terminology
that you ‘re going to need to know I ‘m for stick welding you don ‘t really have
to worry about that for other processes you all right so if your welder turned
off the first thing you ‘re going to want to do is practice this
I ‘ll just take my the tip of the stick electrode here and you brush it against
the piece of material now everybody ‘s going to tell you it ‘s like striking a
match and that ‘s because quite frankly it is it ‘s like striking a 14 inch long
metallic match and just practice this a little bit
you dip down towards the plate contact the plate and up and hopefully your art
can be going at which point you go back down towards the plate and watch the
puddle form and then you drag your photo along and your welding
so definitely just practices until you get the hang of it and another thing
to practice is releasing your stick
