Liu Wen's journey to fashion fame has been, in her words, a series of unexpected fortunes. It began when she was still a child, in the southern Chinese province of Hunan, where she won a modeling contest for a computer. Though she didn't think anything of it then (because she towered over her peers and dressed androgynously), a similar series of ensuing successes led Wen to a budding career and a 2008 summer trip to New York. "Though it was only [seven] years ago, the [American] industry's knowledge of Asian models—much less Chinese models—was quite limited. Great names like Du Juan and Ai Tominaga still resonated in people's memories, but few others did, which struck me as ironic, considering the fashion business thrived so much in my homeland," she wrote last year for Vogue, in an essay translated from Chinese to English. "I confess that in many respects I was lucky—I debuted on the international catwalks just as many important brands had begun to pay fervent attention to the Chinese market. Even hair and makeup styles seemed more suitable for East Asian features than they had before. Slowly but surely, the runways finally became peppered with the black hair of me and my compatriots, and back home, the fashion press lovingly dubbed us the 'Chinese Model Army.'"


Then, a few years later, in 2010, Estée Lauder appointed Wen to be its first-ever Asian global spokesmodel. She called the moment "life-changing" because—for both her and others—it signaled a shift in the views of Asian women worldwide: No longer were they "submissive" or "dainty"; they were "adventurous," "assertive," and "career-oriented." "Overnight, the image of me as an independent, confident young woman was embraced as beautiful," she added in Vogue. And, on top of that, she became a global force to reckon with. For her success, Wen has often credited her mother for instilling within her a sense of professionalism, confidence, and courage.
