If the compound you are recrystallizing is known to be colorless and
if the recrystallization solution is deeply colored after the compound
dissolves, treatment with activated charcoal (Norit, for example)
may remove what is probably a small amount of intensely colored
impurity. Activated charcoal has a large surface area and a strong
affinity for highly conjugated colored compounds, allowing it to
readily adsorb these impurities from the recrystallization solution.
Using too much charcoal, however, may cause some of the compound
you are purifying to be adsorbed by the charcoal and reduce
your yield.
