B. The Author
The Beloved Disciple who leaned on Jesus' breast at the Last Supper (cf. 13:23) was present at the foot of the cross (cf. 19:25-27), and saw and believed when he found the clothes of death empty and íolded in the tomb (cf. 20:3-10). John 21:24 claims that this character ừi the story is the author of the Gospel: "This is the disciple who is bearừig witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testi- mony is true." The íurther identiíication of the Beloved Disciple with John, the son of Zebedee, is well attested ừi Christian art and history. This identiíỉcation owes much to the work of Irenaeus (about 130-200 C.E.) who is often credited with having rescued the Gospel of John from the Gnostics of the second century, but Irenaeus may have been dependmg on even earlier traditions (cf.
