A consideration with a multistage space division switch is that it may be blocking.
It should be clear from Figure 10.5 that a single-stage crossbar matrix is nonblocking;
that is, a path is always available to connect an input to an output.That this may not be
the case with a multiple-stage switch can be seen in Figure 10.6.The heavier lines indicate the lines that are already in use. In this state, input line 10, for example, cannot be
connected to output line 3, 4, or 5, even though all of these output lines are available.A multiple-stage switch can be made nonblocking by increasing the number or size of the
intermediate switches, but of course this increases the cost.
