Every country has a different culture. It can be obviously known as the differences of lifestyle, language, or celebration. Besides, there are some different between two culture that the American and Vietnamese cultures are totally different without any explanations such as the way of acting, greeting, or education. The most evidences that I’ve seen are from the daily activities when I stay in American.
First of all, the American lifestyle is more open than the Vietnamese lifestyle. As the living of the American, people would like to move out of their parent’s house when they are eighteen. They would like to decide everything by themselves, and want to have more personal right or freedom. It can be caused because of the American society; the independent and freedom country. The American characteristic can be said as an early independent personality compared with Vietnamese young people. In Vietnam, everybody would like to live with their parents until they get married. Even when they get married, the couples would like to live in the husband’s family. The Vietnamese citizens would like to live together or around the near area. There are two or three generations that live in the same house. It helps to solve a lot of problems such as baby sister, or the expenses for the supplies and the furniture. People are better able to meet evolving needs from child care to eldercare, and divide the bills. It’s also a good environment for the children because there’re always people around them to take care and play with them.
Another difference is about the system of education, not only at school, but also at home. The U.S. education is more comfortable and easier than the Vietnamese education. The students in Vietnam have to take extra classes at home with their private teacher. The parents will decide what major the student will get, and what school they will study at. School and home are 2 places that the student will stay most of the time. They don’t have to worry about the bills, foods, or money at all because their parents will take care of everything until they graduate. It is a good thing that the young Vietnamese people don’t waste a lot of time for choosing and changing his or her major while the American student changes their major three or four times until they recognize their goal. Vietnamese parents don’t show their love by kissing, or hugging, but they do their best to help their children in their life.
The last thing is American and Vietnamese have a big difference about greeting. In affection, when the American greets the strange peoples, they can greet anyone that they see first. In contrasting, the Vietnamese greets the head of a family or older person first, then the younger ones. Vietnamese culture has a pretty strict education of greeting. Man and elder are considered as superior. It’s really important to show the respect to other people, especially the elder. Vietnamese doesn’t show the friendliness by the way of greeting while the American exchanges cheek-kisses, or a hug to each other. It is considered as a ridiculous to Vietnamese people, and should be done in a private place. It will be never happened between two women, and kissing in front of the children is unacceptable, even a cheek-kissing. Otherwise, it can be seen as normal when two Vietnamese girls touch or hold hands in the public while the American thinks that it’s weird.
Every country has different culture. I’ve learnt a lot of things since I’ve been in America. It’s good to know more about other cultures and lifestyles. The way people speaking, greeting, or lifestyles are just some of the differences that I saw in my life. There’re still so many differences between different countries. It’s interesting to learn something new so that we can understand and do not make the bad situation because of the different cultures.
