Quang Tri: Over 1,000 residents in frontier areas provided with free health check-upsNDO – More than 1,000 people who come from Vietnam’s ethnic minorities and Laotian citizens residing alongside border areas in Dakrong district in the Central Highlands province of Quang Tri have been provided with free medical check-ups and medicine.From October 24-25, doctors, nurses and pharmacists from Quang Tri’s Young Physicians’ Association and Border Guard provided medical examinations and medicines free-of-charge for disadvantaged people in the locality, in response to the 2015 Public Healthcare Programme launched by the Vietnam Red Cross Society.Running from May 1 to the years-end, the programme aims to provide free healthcare and medical consultations for at least 1 million people across the country.Due to the mountainous terrain and transport limitation, ethnic minorities in the border areas of Quang Tri province face difficulties in accessing healthcare services. The programme offers free medical care and health advice for the disadvantaged, helping them to improve their living standards. In addition, it also contributes to further tightening relations between Quang Tri and Laos’s neighbouring Salavan province.On the occasion, the organisers presented 50 gifts to Lao families and 170 presents for disadvantaged families and students in A Vao commune.Earlier on Saturday evening, the delegation organised a cultural exchange programme themed ‘Warm winter in the border areas’, in which the Vietnam Youth Federation – Quang Tri chapter provided VND250 million for the construction of a boarding house for Pa Nang Secondary School in Pa Nang commune.
