He has been an MP since then. He was Minister of the Department of Defence from 1964-70, and has personally never lost in a national election. He has served on more government committees than any other MP in history. He has written three books, including a spy story called The Time to Run, and his autobiography, The Time of My Life. The last chapter of the autobiography, which describes the critical election of 1964, won an award for political writing and appeared as a series of articles in The Times of London. He is married to the artist Edna Heal, a well-known painter, and they have two children. They lived in Oxford for 15 years, then they moved to London in 1970. They now live in a house in Cadogan Square in central London. Dennis says he is not thinking of leaving politics any time in the near future.
