There are 185 members of WIPO
According to the WIPO website, membership is open to any nation or state that:
“(i) is a member of the Paris Union for the Protection of Industrial Property, or of the Berne Union for the Protection of Literary and
Artistic Works;
(ii) or is a member of the United Nations, or of any of the United Nations' Specialized Agencies, or of the International Atomic Energy
Agency, or that is a party to the Statute of the International Court of Justice;
(iii) or is invited by the WIPO General Assembly to become a Member State of the Organization.”
IP, and potential breaches of IP protection laws, transcend national borders. The advantage of an international organisation overseeing the framework for IP protection globally is so that there is consistency between countries.
