In the most familiar form of the Old Testament Malachi is the last book, and as
such it has often been given a special status in Christian eyes. It is seen as
pointing forward to the New Testament, which follows immediately in most
versions of the Protestant Bible, which have usually not included the Apocrypha.
Hence Malachi came to be regarded as standing at the beginning of the
“ inter-testamental period.” This was a widespread motif in the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries; for example, the very popular book by Humphrey
