Survey techniques, such as questionnaires, interviews etc., are highly labour intensive on the part of respondents and particularly on the part of the researcher; one consequence is the low response rate, which is common, notably for postal questionnaires which can expect a 25–35% useable response rate. Thus, many surveys do not produce data from which results capable of strong support for tests of hypotheses or conclusions can be drawn. Further, self-completed responses are very prone to bias and distortions –giving answers which respondents believe ‘should’ be given rather than
providing their ‘true’ answers; giving answers to ‘please’ the researcher etc. –as well as being self-perceptions by the respondents.
