goes a famous saying well-known on both sides of the Chinese-Vietnamese border. It is indeed these two features, mountains and water, that best describe the topography of the border region between the two countries. Two Chinese Provinces, Yunnan and Guangxi share a border with Vietnam. The border with Yunnan is mountainous and the border with Guangxi features both mountains and water, namely the Beilun river and finally the Gulf of Tonkin or separate Vietnam from Hainan Island, China’s smallest Province.
