What is pride? Is it a good thing or is it bad?
I know that having pride in a job well done is thought to be a good thing. But the bank robber who got away with all the loot is quite proud of himself as well. So......What do you think ?
Update: Thank you all for your answers. I think it to be a valid and healthy disscussion. It will go to popular vote. Mona is on to somthing.

Best Answer: As long as no one gets 'hurt' from your pride (like the bank in your example) everything's fine.
Plus pride in extreme forms can be 'a bad thing'. For example national pride..

Pride could be either good or bad. The bank robber may seem like he is happy, but he is not. He has deep problems that make him rob places and thats not good. He may feel happy at the moment he runs away with the money but deep inside he is not happy, how can one be happy while having to live a life hiding ?? I dont believe so. Plus, he knows that what he does is not approved by society in our morals and values. Pride is good at times when its not to extremes (because extremes are always bad). For instance, if you do good in school, if you are promoted at work, or if you know someone was trying to hurt you in any way and you didn't let them...its great to feel proud of yourself as long as you dont feel better than anybody and as long as you stay humble in your heart. Pride, though could also be bad. Some people miss a lot of opportunities due to their pride, they dont see that it's ok to make mistakes and they usually don't forgive them, which is what many times leads them to so sad loneliness in the end.

Pride is an emotion which refers to a strong sense of self-respect, a refusal to be humiliated as well as joy in the accomplishments of oneself or a person, group, nation or object that one identifies with, or to think of one's self as being better than anyone else. It is considered one of the seven deadly sins in all religions.

Nietzsche saw Pride as an example of the previous, master set of morals that has been replaced with slave moralities. In this, Pride was good, because it acknowledges the good and the noble, rejecting the weak and insipid.

Secondary pride is a little-known but often felt variant of pride. The pride people feel for what their ancestors, children, or country has done is classified as secondary or vicarious pride.

In my opinion there should be a balance in everything, so a balanced pride, especially secondary pride is healthy

The superficial answer: Pride is good. The real answer: Pride is bad. There are few positives to pride, however, the bad far surpass the good. Pride will keep you from forgiving people. Pride will make you walk away, when you really want to stay. It'll harden your heart. Makes you bitter, which leads to resentment. Pride keeps you from confessing your faults, what you have done wrong, and saying I'm sorry. If you humble yourself, you'd be much better off. The Bible talks about pride, and about how bad it is...it's one of the seven deadliest sins. "Love is not proud". If you love someone, let alone yourself, you'd have to "swallow your pride", to actually get to the heart of the matter.

I use to think having pride was a good thing and, part of it can be. When it stops you from being human and having a heart, when you feel as though you are superior to everyone else, always have to be right, then your never going to humble yourself. That grace will escape you. You'll always have heartache, and never be happy...but your pride and ego will be estatic....just not your heart.

Pride really is an "ego" thing, if you think about it.

Pride, and more precisely the question of whether it is good or bad, has always intrigued me. Here are some thoughts, though by no means do I claim them to be universally true.

First, it is important to be critical of how you let your pride impact yourself, in both thought and behavior. Another way of looking at this is: how do you "use" your pride, to what end is it a source of false confidence, or a genuine sense of accomplishment. The term pride is often used as a euphemism for over-confidence, a la arrogance. Take the classmate who received the highest grade on a test and could not help but discuss this fact with everyone, with the extrinsic intent to remind them of their failure. On the other hand, pride can also be a self-motivating factor. On that same test, let's assume a person who typically receives B's and C's gets an A. Rather than bragging about it, s/he experiences a true sense of accomplishment, a genuine pride in their capacity to do well. Thus, pride in this situation may serve as a motivating agent in subsequent tests.

In the end, one's intentionality, which only they really know, determines whether the pride they experience is good or bad. A question of morality, really.

Hope that helps. Take care.

It can be both depending on the reason for the pride. I pride myself when I do a good job, but don't need to boast about it. I have pride in my sons for having turned out to be very nice, well balanced individuals.
If I took pride at ............oh, something like having got away with (your suggestion) a bank robbery or a crime that is not a healthy sort of pride. Actually, as I think about it that is not pride but more like arrogance at having got away with breaking society's rule. And that sort of arrogance would, I suspect, lead to more crimal activities because of a belief that - having seemingly got away with one crime they can get away with more with the arrogance of assuming they will never get caught.

National Pride a bad thing? no wonder one no one cares about their counties and only themselves. Hate you government, not your country cause if things keep going this way you won't have one in 50 years.

Anyways....Pride is good, being proud of yourself for a job well done or proud of your family. Being proud when you have done something bad is a problem. Don't listen to that guy who said National Pride is a bad thing, hes a retard...and its for reasons like that, that no one wants to wok together to better their nation.

Pride is neither of these things - it is human nature. Some can call it a sin, but then, there is no such thing a sin. Pride comes from instinct, and it is human instinct to be proud of general things.
