Bản ballad nguồn gốc tên từ thời trung cổ ca khúc dance hay "ballares" (L: ballare, nhảy) Pháp, [1] mà từ đó "múa ba lê" cũng có nguồn gốc, cũng như các hình thức thay thế đối thủ đã trở thành ballade Pháp. Như một bài hát kể chuyện, chủ đề và chức năng của chúng có thể bắt nguồn từ truyền thống Scandinavia và Đức kể chuyện có thể được nhìn thấy trong những bài thơ như Beowulf. Về âm nhạc họ đã bị ảnh hưởng bởi các Minnesinger. Các ví dụ sớm nhất về một bản ballad dễ nhận dạng ở Anh là "Judas" trong một bản thảo từ thế kỷ 13.
