3-Butynol (3.02 mL, 40 mmol) and pyridine (256 μL, 4 mmol) were

placed in a 10 mL roundbottomed flask, and the mixture was cooled in an ice bath. Then, thionyl

chloride (2.91 mL, 40 mmol) was added dropwise for 10 min. The flask was shaken occasionally

during the addition, and after the thionyl chloride was added, the mixture was heated under reflux

30 min. Fractional distillation of the products gave 4-chloro-1-butyne as a yellow liquid (3.34 mL).
