To study the vast variety of materials that exist in theuniverse, the study must be made in a systematicmanner. Therefore, matter is classified according toseveral different schemes. Matter may be classifiedas organic or inorganic. It is organic if it is a compoundof carbon and hydrogen (see Chapter 14).Otherwise, it is inorganic. Another such scheme uses the composition ofmatter as a basis for classification; other schemes are based on chemicalproperties of the various classes. For examples, substances may be classifiedas acids, bases, or salts. Each scheme is useful, allowing the studyof a vast variety of materials in terms of a given class.
