PAINTING
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. The work of this Section shall include, but not necessarily be limited to:
1. Field painting of exposed interior items and surfaces.
2. Field painting of exposed exterior items and surfaces.
3. Surface preparation for painting.
B. Coordination: Coordinate the work with that of other Trade Contractors to ensure proper
execution of the work of both trades. Examine Contract Documents for requirements that
directly affect or are affected by Work of this Section.
1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including Division 00 Documents and
Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. Other related sections include,
but are not limited to:
a. Section 051200 - STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING.
b. Section 055000 - METAL FABRICATIONS.
c. Section 064023 - INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL WOODWORK.
d. Section 081113 - HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES.
e. Section 081416 - FLUSH WOOD DOORS.
f. Section 092116 - GYPSUM BOARD ASSEMBLIES.
g. Section 092300 - GYPSUM PLASTERING.
h. Section 092400 - PORTLAND CEMENT PLASTER.
i. Section 092713 - GLASS-FIBER-REINFORCED PLASTER FABRICATIONS.
C. Extra Materials:
1. Maintenance Materials: Provide 2 sealed cans of 5 L capacity minimum of each
product, in each color used in the work, for Employer’s use in maintenance. Containers
to be new, fully labeled with manufacturer’s name, type of paint, and color.
1.2 QUALITY CONTROL REQUIREMENTS
A. Pre Contract Samples:
1. Technical literature.
B. Post Contract Samples:
1. 1000mm x 1000mm sample of finish.
C. Mock-Ups:
1. As required by the Engineer and/or the PM/CM.
D. Prototypes:
1. As required by the Engineer and/or the PM/CM.
E. Benchmarks:
1. The first fully completed bay on specified substrate or full unit item on site.
1.3 SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS

Building Rating System and the VGBC LOTUS Green Building System. Although the Office
Tower is the only part of the Project that is seeking LEED and LOTUS certification, the
Employer requires that the construction of the entire Project be performed with careful
adherence to the sustainability goals laid out in the following documents:
1. Section 017419 - CONSTRUCTION WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL.
2. Section 018113 - SUSTAINABLE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS.
3. Section 018117 - SUSTAINABILITY ACTION PLAN.
4. Section 018119 - CONSTRUCTION INDOOR AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT.
B. Building Rating: The Office Tower is seeking rating under both the USGBC LEED Green
Building System and the VGBC LOTUS Non-Residential Rating Tool, as follows:
1. USGBC LEED Rating: Comply with project requirements intended to achieve the
following Rating, as measured and documented according to the USGBC LEED Green
Building Rating System, Version indicated:
a. Rating: Gold.
b. Version: LEED 2009 for Core & Shell.
2. VGBC LOTUS Rating: Comply with project requirements intended to achieve the
following Rating, as measured and documented according to the VGBC LOTUS Rating
System, Version indicated:
a. Rating: Silver.
b. Version: LOTUS Non-Residential Pilot.
3. Division 01 Requirements specific to the ratings, in addition to those indicated in
Paragraph 1.3A. herein, include:
a. Section 018115 - LEED REQUIREMENTS SUMMARY.
b. Section 018116 - LOTUS REQUIREMENTS SUMMARY.
c. Section 019113 - GENERAL COMMISSIONING REQUIREMENTS.
C. Materials Sustainability Requirements:
1. Use field applied paints and coatings that comply with the VOC limits and chemical
restrictions specified in the Sustainability Action Plan.
1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. Material Codes:
1. Type PT-101 Emulsion Paint Finish:
a. Emulsion paint to substrates as indicated on the Drawings.
b. Preparation shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions.
c. The required number of coatings and application shall be carried out in
accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
d. The color shall be accepted by the Engineer through the submittal of samples.
2. Type PT-102 Epoxy Floor Paint:
a. Epoxy floor paint to floor areas as indicated on the Drawings.
b. Provide a two part component water dispersal epoxy resin coating system to meet
the performance requirements.
c. Preparation shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's

d. The color shall be accepted by the Engineer through the submittal of samples.
e. Mixing and application shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's

4. Type PT-201 Concrete Paint - External:
a. Concrete/ masonry paint to substrates as indicated on the Drawings.
b. Preparation shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions.
c. The required number of coatings and application shall be carried out in
accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
d. There shall be a minimum 2 full finishing coats of concrete/ masonry paint.
e. The color shall be accepted by the Engineer through the submittal of samples.
B. Requirements, General:
1. All materials, labour and equipment required to complete the painting work, together
with ancillary work described and implied, to the full intent of the drawings and
schedules.
2. Make thorough examination of drawings, details and schedules, determine the intent,
extent, materials, types of surfaces, locations, and be fully cognizant of requirements.
3. Examine the specifications and drawings for the work of other Sections regarding the
provisions for prime and finish coats. Paint or finish all materials installed throughout
the project, which are required to be painted or finished and which are left unfinished or
unpainted by other Sections.
4. For areas indicated as unfinished in the Room Finish Schedule, painting is As required
by the Engineer and/or the PM/CM except for the following: all structural steel, doors
and frames, railings, miscellaneous metal work, insulation on mechanical pipes and
equipment, pipes and fittings, electrical mounting boards and all gypsum board
surfaces. See schedule for colors.
5. Painting includes field painting of exposed bare and covered pipes and ducts (including
color coding), hangers, exposed steel and iron supports, and surfaces of mechanical
and electrical equipment that do not have a factory-applied final finish.
6. Whether specified or not in the Room Finish Schedule, all gypsum board surfaces
shall, as a minimum, be prime painted.
7. Paint all exposed exterior unfinished, primed or galvanized steel.
8. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating
parts, and labels.
a. Prefinished items include the following factory-finished components:
1). Architectural woodwork.
2). Acoustical wall panels.
3). Metal toilet enclosures.
