Total productive maintenance (TPM) is focused on ensuring that operating systems will perform their intended function reliably. The goal of TPM is to prevent equipment failures and downtime- ideally, to have “zero accidents, zero defects, and failures” in the entire life cycle of the operating system. TPM seeks to• Maximize overall equipment effectiveness and eliminate unplanned downtime,• Create worker “ownership” ò th equipment by involving them in maintenance activities, and• Foster continuous efforts to improve equipment operation through employee involvement activities.Because of ít importance in lean thinking, TPM has been called “lean to maintenance”. Lean maintenance is more than preventing failures of equipment and processes; it now includes maintenance and backup systems such as the Internet or wireless networks.
